Summary/Abstract: Martin Sentiváni was born in Liptovský Ján (northern Slovakia) into a noble family. The early years of his life have not yet been studied by historians and it is only since his entry into the Society of Jesus at the age of twenty (1653) that we are better informed about the events of his life. He taught at the Jesuit universities in Vienna, Graz, Munich, Košice and Trnava (the latter two in Slovakia, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary).3 Sentiváni spent most of his life in Trnava (Tyrnavia in Latin) where he held several leading positions at the local Jesuit university (dean of the philosophical and theological faculties, rector of the university) until his death in 1705. Sentiváni’s prolific literary work makes him one the most important Neo-Latin authors of Slovakia as well as of the former Kingdom of Hungary.
