HOW SHOULD AN INTERPRETER BE LITERATE?

Summary/Abstract: In this study, we will examine the relationship between “reading” and “translation”, and between “literacy” and “interpretership”. We aim to find a satisfactory answer to the question “Is the interpreter a real literate?” The “reading” and “interpreting” actions will be considered in the frame of linguistics of discourse. For this reason, the study examines how the elements with the components such as “word, utterance, discourse”, which constitute the written text and also the prosodic factors that constitute the extra components, are to be read and interpreted by an interpreter. On the other hand, we will point to the importance of indicators and the function of enunciation on the context during the reading process. Consequently, it will be indicated how we need to read and examine the utterance and its fractions by concrete examples which are chosen from a classic novel that has been translated from Turkish language into French with the method of discourse analysis.
