Summary/Abstract: It has been written a lot about the life and the artistic heritage of Zahari Zograf but there is not enough knowledge about his techniques and the materials he used. The data about his experiments along with other icon-painters of his time, the use of oils, and the oil painting technique of the Western European artists is even less. This aspect of the heritage of the Samokov reviv- al masters from the beginning till the middle of ХIХ century is less known regardless of the fact that their works has been renovated and restored many times in the past. Contemporary publications gave a new touch to the some of Zahari Zograf’s art works, filling the missing links in the documental information taken from his correspondence and personal notes which were earlier released by I. Shishmanov, V. Zahariev and A. vasilev. They have changed some of the old apprehension about the bearing date and the authorship of some of the most productive icon- painters in the Bulgarian Revival. The reexamination of the techno- logical aspect in the icon-painting of Zahari Zograf and especially the use or the absence of oil paints and oil emulsions and their interpretation in specialized literature is the subject of the current research. Ad- ditionally are included unknown painting and graphic works from the archive of Zahari Zograf in the Historical museum in Samokov and the collection of the National Art Gallery.
