Summary/Abstract: A high priority for all countries and their allies is to ensure a coordinated public health, laboratory and medical response to natural and man-made disasters. There is now a heightened awareness of the threat posed by chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) agents. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization conducted an Advanced Study Institute (ASI) in Skopje Macedonia, in June 2006, one of several that have addressed the CBR threat. The ASI stressed the risk to public health of CBR agent injury-including care for psychological effects-and the need for an international, coordinated system for both public health communication and public health response. Such a system should address both natural disaster and CBR agent response should be internet-linked should include infrastructure for staffing supplies and risk communication and should provide ongoing raining in these topics.
