Summary/Abstract: Due to its intellectual air, Alexandria, the very centre of Hellenism and the Jewish culture in the first centuries of the Christian era became the place where knowledge was known as an act of synthesis of the Christian theology and philosophy. The Catechetical School of Alexandria resisted materialism, scepticism and mythologism, streams that were in full swing at the time. Christianity was wise enough as to take over some of the philosophical concepts and the speculative and allegorical terminology; all these entered later the thesaurus of the Church Tradition.
