Summary/Abstract: Following a detailed discussion of subcultural theories, with a special emphasis on the Birmingham body of work and criticisms thereof, Bennett argues that the concept of subculture no longer offers a tenable theoretical framework for discussing questions regarding youth, music, fashion and style. The alternative concepts of lifestyle and neo-tribe are examined as possible tools in the place of subculture. Building upon Maffesoli’s work the author argues for the adoption of the latter, emphasising the fit between the fluid collectivities designated as neo-tribes and the same fluidity characterising collective associations based around musical and stylistic preferences. This correspondence and the viability of the concept neo-tribe are further demonstrated through a presentation of some of the results of the author’s empirical study of the Newcastle upon Tyne urban dance music scene.
