European Union And The End Of The Third Way?

Summary/Abstract: The paper begins with the assumption that insights concerning the internal adaptation of the eU to the contradictory processes of global-ization are necessary for our own path to europe. For this reason, the achievements of the, so called, Third way are analyzed, for it attempted to find a formula of compromise between the european social project, one of the foundations of european identity, and the neo-liberal economic directives. The failure of the Third way strengthened the argumentation that economic efficiency demands radical dismantling of the social state. The author questions such conclusions on the basis of the experience of Scandinavian countries, and the attitudes of the eU citizens, whose dissatisfaction with the erosion of the social state is transformed into a resistance to further eU enlargement, into a stance against immigrants and multicultural society.
