CHEKHOV'S ATTITUDE TO TRADITION AND MODERNITY (Some Comments on Ehrenburg's Essay)

Summary/Abstract: Ilya Ehrenburg analyses the works of the great writer and tries to indicate the sources of his greatness. The conclusion is that the greatness is rooted in the universality of the thought in his works. Following this way of thinking he rejects the radical opposition between tradition and modernity. This leads to the concept that, as far as masterpieces of art are concemed, modernity signifies just a text written in a cocle of tradition.
