Doubting theory (of translation)

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses a rift in contemporary translation studies between two oppositions: 1) approaching translation from a literary or linguistic perspective and 2) the need for a cohesive and comprehensive theory of translation and cognitive relativism typical for contemporary humanities. Scientifically-conceived theory of translation, treated as a set of directions for researchers or as a guide covering correct techniques for translating, has no legitimacy anymore. It has been replaced by perspectives favoring the right to interpretation, which does not need to be tied to any cohesive theoretical or epistemological guidance.
