Local and regional government sector debt in the European Union countries during the economic crisis

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to assess the changes in the value and structure of local and regional government debt during the recent economic crisis. The study covered all countries of the European Union. In order to maintain comparability over time and different countries, the analysis was based on data from Eurostat. The outcomes of the study indicate that the volume of local and regional government sector debt increased significantly during the crisis. At the same time there was no significant increase in short-term instruments in the debt structure of this sector. The use of particular debt instruments has been changing over time. However, it is difficult to identify clear trends in these changes in the EU countries.
