Summary/Abstract: A. Philippide’s theory on the dynamics of the language (conditioned by the peoples’ or ethnic groups’ particularities, which is manifested thorough relatively unitary articulatory and psychological basis) finds its application in the approach of one of the most complex Romanian language historical phonetics problems, the velarization of the palatal vowels. Thus, the scientist considers that their adaptation to certain phonetic proximities is just the facilitating condition, but definitely not the cause of such an evolution, which is certainly to have been triggered by the articulation basis. Continuing the master’s work within the same general boundaries, G. Ivănescu and Vasile Arvinte, high representatives of the linguistics school of Iaşi, built on Philippide’s doctrine, also brought personal views on the subject.
