Summary/Abstract: Although he never quoted from Wilhelm von Humboldt directly, Alexandru Philippide (1859-1933), the great Jassyan linguist, articulated his linguistic conception on a few important ideas of the Humboldtian legacy. Particularly through his theory on the complementarity between the articulatory basis and the psychological one, as essential factors in explaining linguistic changes, Alexandru Philippide managed to avoid the excessive formalism that was predominant in the twentieth-century structuralist orientations.
