Summary/Abstract: The meaning of idioms is not arbitrary but it is justified by the metaphorical mapping (from a source domain onto a target domain) and certain image schemas that belong to perception and intuition. Studying the translation of Ion Creangă’s work in English, one could notice a remarkable similarity in the source domains of the Romanian and English idioms, but also many differences. The explanation for the similarity could be the fact that there are certain conventional images shared by many people, even from different linguistic communities. The different source domains could be the result of the fact that cultural knowledge is turned into conventional images, therefore the difference between languages is due to the differences between conventional images.
