Summary/Abstract: The classical perspective on idioms, that of lexicology, is that idioms are indissoluble expressions whose meaning cannot be deduced from the meanings of their elements. The phraseology is in a serious dilemma when it comes to explaining the nature of another category of phrases, called expressions. The lexicological criteria lose their functionality, therefore, the solution for defining this category is the extraction of a series of common characteristics, on the basis of examples. The only argument that comes from lexicology, that might place them into the category of „phraseological units” is that they exist as ready-made units, that are repeatedly used in discourse.
