Summary/Abstract: Birth rate research shows that psychic aptitude and reproductive ideal determine to a great extent the reproductive behaviour and the number of children expected to be born in a family in modern conditions. Therefore, it is evident that concrete state-sponsored measures of purely material character could produce practical effect only on the reproductive ideal in such categories of the population, which could not reach it on their own for lack of funds and miserable living conditions. At the same time it could be expected that through research and analysis of the results to respective effects could enhance the process, although – as it is well known – changes in consciousness are most difficult to obtain. Censuses, which study not only the actual birth rate but also abstract model of the family, reproductive ideals and tendencies, give valuable information for the analysis of these processes. The article analyzes some basic results of the representative research on birth rate held within the last census and enumeration of housing estates and farms in Bulgaria. Reproductive ideals and tendencies, as well as their practical application and basic reasons for failure to achieve one’s reproductive desires, are also examined.
