Summary/Abstract: Public participation in decision-making in the field of environmental protection in Serbia is crucial for the preservation of the basic principles of sustainable development and promote responsible conduct of government, individuals and companies towards the environment where we live. In practice, a small number of investors are trying to acquaint the public with the details of the projects on which he works, and especially to learn about public opinion. The institutions that are responsible for the preparation of studies about the effect on the environment do not want to spend the time and funds needed for informing the public adequately. In a time of global environmental crisis in addition to information, legislation, environmental eligible investments, training and education in the environmental field is set as a top priority, because it directly affects on the creation of environmental awareness and ecological behaviour. Education is necessary for all categories of the population, because the ecological awareness in Serbia is at a very low level. Education should start since preschool, where children acquire first knowledge on environmental protection, while in elementary school about the importance of environmental protection must be learned through more objects of nature and science, biology, geography, physics and chemistry and electives. Eco content should ensure that students learn in elementary school: basic concepts (the term disturbance of the ecological balance, the term degradation of the environment, etc.); to gain knowledge about the negative effects of polluted air, soil, water, how to prevent and protect against all negative influences.
