Summary/Abstract: The UN International Year of Mountains celebrated in 2002 testified, among several other initiatives in the past decade, that sustainable development policies has to grant an increasingly relevant role to mountain areas, for their endowment in natural capital and their peculiarity of issues needing to be targeted by specific long-term actions. At the same time, EC and OECD emphasize the importance of evaluation as a strategic tool in the process of desig and implementation of development policies. The work aims at applying a strategic evaluation approach to local development in the Braşov County in România, focusing on the Southern mountain area. Policies and objectives are classified and compared to a taxonomy of needs and objectives resulting from baseline analysis, to identify policy issues.
