Summary/Abstract: To understand what democratic options arise out of this growing institutionalization of the global economy, in my research I have sought to establish the extent to which these powerful global actors actually need national states, especially in the highly developed world. In other words, regardless of the facts of increased global mobility, global firms and markets need a global operations space that is at least partly inserted in the countries that comprise the global economy. They need private property protections and guarantees of contracts from each of the states involved.
