Summary/Abstract: After nineteen years of postcommunism, Romania experiences a lot of changes in the social structure. The way from a social structure, which characterized the communist society, to a different kind of social structure, which characterizes a democratic society, is not finished yet. A slight stratification resulting from the establishment of a middle class and the emergence of some new categories such as entrepreneurs, was visible in Romania after the year 2000. After this year, the level of poverty, as well as the level of unemployement began to decrease. This kind of optimism may disappear in the context of the new financial and economic crisis. This crisis may increase the level of poverty again, and also the level of social homogenisation. Making a theoretical study as well as an empirical one, we analised some statistical data to identify the level of some socio-economic indicators, which help us to understand the process of social stratification in Romania.
