Summary/Abstract: The impersonal pronominal construction in Italian underwent a major innovation during the 19th century: it began to be used with reflexive verbs (ci si dice, "on se dit") and with pronominalized nominal constituents with pronouns in the accusative (li si vede, "on les voit"). This evolution, which is based on more ancient contamination between the pronominal turn and the first person plural, emerges in the northern and north-eastern dialects of Italy. This new construction will then gradually penetrate the Italian language under the successive influences of Enlightenment, Romanticism and the Risorgimento.
