Demographic-Political Aspects of Presence of Muslims in France

Summary/Abstract: Demographic-political aspects of the presence of Muslims in France are becoming a central issue in the French debates, both scientifi c and political. The reason for this is the growing share of Muslims in the population of former metropolis. In this publication we fi rstly present different points of view related to specifying the number of French Muslims (which is a disputable matter due to the local legal regulations). We also present their demographic structure with characteristics of gender proportion, fertility rates of Muslim women in relation to other groups of women – both in France, as well as in other Muslim countries. We also highlight the specifi c nature of Muslim immigration. Finally, we present the projections of trends that will infl uence – according to the French demographer Yves-Marie Laulan – the numerical French Muslim immigration in the next 50 years.
