Summary/Abstract: Twenty-one officially published life tables covering the period 1892-1999 are analyzed. Life expectancy at birth has mounted by 38,7 years for 75 years (1899-1974), but a gradual decrease has persisted since mid-seventies resulting in a 1,6 years decrement. This indicator has fluctuated about 75,5 years in women, but no tendency to increase has been registered since mid-seventies. The Majer's modal length of life indicator has fluctuated about 75,5 years in men and about 77-79 years in women. Taking into account both the contemporary definition of the third age (65 years and over) and the dynamics of life expectancy, the author puts forward a modification of Majer's formula. If calculated according to the new formula, modal length of life is distinguished by its stability in time, showing in the same time a marked sex difference. Due to all this, the new indicator could be considered a stable biological (or bio-demographical) characteristics of the human species; it is relatively independent of the actual mortality regime. It could be accepted also as a remote target of population policy, if the latter is directed to preservation and enlargement of the nation's life potential.
