Summary/Abstract: The general mortality of Bulgarian men, living in rural areas, has been substantially higher, if compared with that of the urban male population. The author studied the nature of the difference by residence, using coefficients of general mortality and of mortality by cause, standardized for age by a direct method. Approximately ninety percent of the difference by residence consisted of cardiovascular diseases (50%), followed by accidents, neoplasms, and respiratory diseases. The risk factor constellation of Bulgarian men in working age, revealed in 1985-1986 as a result of a screening of 238 000 men aged 15-64, is demonstrated. The author concludes, that the higher mortality of rural men in Bulgaria is an indisputable fact which does not depend on the age structure of the population being compared. The responsible risk factors are an integral part of the life style and are predominantly behavioural.
