Summary/Abstract: On the one hand, Pakistan is the cradle of the Taliban movement. Which does not ensure a peaceful relation between Pakistan and Afghanistan. On the other hand, the relation with India is tensioned. Neither are the relations with Iran, the US and other countries in Central Asia encouraging. Adding to the picture, the situation in the country as such is unquiet – military dictatorship, public opinion favouring democratization, illiteracy, militant madrasses. All these in an Islamic world that has been more and more alienated by the US policy in the region. Pakistan also possesses nuclear weapons, making the country even more dangerous as it is placed at the crossroads of the international drugs trade, in the heart of the Islamic extremism, in the middle of nuclear proliferation. Its military oligarchy dominates also its economy. In this very complex and explosive context, what is the chance of Pakistan to become a democracy?
