Summary/Abstract: Carl Schmitt’s work, first published in 1927 and modified several times afterwards, is the only one that underwent such enormous conceptual and historical development as the concept of the political that reached its final form in its version of 1963. The history of the text publication sheds light on the “open” nature of this problematic work. What urged then Schmitt to keep re-interpreting his own work during those 35 years and even after? The hypotheses of my paper are as follows: The criticism of his contemporaries and his “hidden dialogues” with them had an impact on him, and he included them – publicly or in a hidden way - in the later versions. My paper is meant to confirm these hypotheses, thus it analyses and reconstructs the actual semantic content in function of the notes written to Schmitt’s the concept of the political by two critics, Leo Strauss and Hans Joachim Morgenthau.
