{Dictionary of the Local Dialect Zakopane and the Area} Based on Materials by Juliusz Zborowski

Summary/Abstract: This article aims at describing the dictionary based on handwritten materials collected by Juliusz Zborowski, a well-known ethnographer and linguist. In the years 1911–1964 he gathered about 6 000 index cards with dialectal words and phrases aiming to compile a dictionary of the Polish Podhale (Tatra Highlands) dialect. After more than 40 years the {Dictionary of the Local Dialect of Zakopane and the Area}, prepared by members of the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences under the direction of Prof. Joanna Okoniowa, was published in December 2009. In this paper the lexicographic methods of Zborowski are presented and emphasis has been placed on the way he selected and organized the linguistic material. Furthermore, the necessary modifications and improvements made during the process of preparing the book for publishing are outlined. Finally, profits of applying a special computer programme are discussed.
