Summary/Abstract: The paper provides an assessment of Jan Karłowicz’s {Słownik gwar polskich} [‘Dictionary of Polish Dialects’] from a perspective of its hundred-year history. It also evaluates from a contemporary point of view the extensive review of Karłowicz’s dictionary formulated by Kazimierz Nitsch, a review that substantially influenced the outlook on the dictionary and the evaluation of its author as a researcher. As seen from the contemporary perspective, the {Dictionary of Polish Dialects} appears to be not only a major breakthrough in the 19th-century dialectology, but also a source of inspiration for the 21st-century scholars.
