Summary/Abstract: The article presents the history of the verb {ględać} (Old Slavonic {ględati} meaning‘to look at sth, to see’) and of words stemming from it such as: {doglądać, podglądać, przyglądać} and their derivatives in Polish. The analysis also includes changes in the meaning of these words. Some of them retained perceptual content for a long time and in some cases it was also enriched by information concerning the way and the aim of looking, which in a couple of them is still present. Moreover, the following semantic changes were characteristic for the words in question: 1. from visual perception to control and within the scope of its meaning also to care or concern, 2. from visual perception to mental processes, 3. from visual perception to physical activities whose aim is to pay someone a visit.
