Summary/Abstract: The paper concerns the problem of discrepancy between the official data of the rural population and the actual number of inhabitants. Its purpose is to show the magnitude of these differences on the basis of the results of quantitative research conducted in 55 selected villages of the Opole Voivodeship. In the case of these villages, the actual number of the population was on average 17.7% less than the number indicated by official data although there were considerable discrepancies between villages. Unregistered population losses were greater in case of villages inhabited by people of dual Polish and German citizenship, outlying villages and villages where in the past people were employed in the industry. The findings indicate that the official population data should not be the only source of information on which demographic and socio-economic situation diagnosis is based.
