Summary/Abstract: Most academic cities become areas of intense migration flows. The reason is the presence of higher education institutions which act like magnets attracting students. An excellent example of such a city is Opole, which has performed a role of an academic centre for a few decades, and since 1994 has provided a higher education institution with the university status. The purpose of the establishment of Opole University, for which the intellectual elites of Opole – above all the Archbishop Alfons Nossol – strove so effectively, was to integrate and, in a sense, to keep within the region the culturally and ethnically diverse youth of Opole voivodeship. The question is whether this aim has been achieved. The article attempts to assess the effectiveness with which the higher education institutions of Opole attract the youth of the region. On one hand, the article presents the results of the research performed among the secondary school graduates from Opole voivodeship with respect to the plans as regards the choice of the place for the studies. On the other hand, it presents the results of the research performed among the students taking up studies at all the higher education institutions of the region.
