Summary/Abstract: This study aims at an ethnological approach of one of the most complex mythological beings of the Romanian folklore, strigoiul (the ghost), focusing on a corpus of 70 texts preserved in the Folklore Archive from the Faculty of Letters, at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj. The folkloric texts were collected between 1974-1977 by researchers (faculty and students), during an ethnographic fieldwork carried out in the Oaş Country, situated in the Nord-Western part of Romania. My analysis is an inquiry into the functions fulfilled by the ghosts in Romanian folkloric culture. I argue that these seem to monitors and controllers of the cultural and social order, as they keep watch and ward over the equilibrium and the traditional rules of the communities.
