Summary/Abstract: The article provides an overview of the reception of Freud’s theory in France in interwar period. The characterization of the pioneering work and activity of French precursors of psychoanalysis leads to the conclusion that university and medical milieux in France were overtly hostile to the new discipline inaugurated by Freud, which explains why the institutional foundations of the French psychoanalytical movement (associations, translations, magazines) appeared with a delay of two decades, comparing to the majority of European countries. The main causes of this prejudice against Freud and his theory in France are presented in the article. The paper discusses also a curious attempt – made by some of the French disciples of Freud – to create a French version of his doctrine which was supposed to be more compatible with the Cartesian rationality and the French sensibility, denominated often as génie latin, and which refuted many of the most important Freud’s assertions, especially those concerning the role of the sexuality in human life.
