- Summary/Abstract:The author points out the essential problem encountered by a contemporary reader and, therefore, also by a teacher of Polish as a foreign language. He indicates the difference between the museum culture (“unreadable things”) and the culture in touch (“interesting things that one could actually read”). This problem is defined in the context of communication catastrophe in the culture of the late 20th and the 21st century (deluge of populism, depreciation of styles and genres, competition of media). The author seeks to show how contemporary literature wants to get out of this communicational impasse and renew bonds with readers. He enumerates three ways in which literature tries to escape from the trap of losing contact with recipients. The first one is obliterating differences from other media (for example a desire to coexist with image, photography, television, the internet). The second one consists of a bold transgressing of the border between a happening and a description (different types of online narration participating in the events: reportages, self-presentations of authors during their creative process, internet contacts, fan groups). Finally, the third one involves leaving fiction for immersion, which means rejecting a realistic probability for a simply compelling story, no matter if it is non-fiction or fantasy. The author sees the above-mentioned attempts of renewing contact with readers also as possible ways to liven classes of Polish as a foreign language focused on teaching Polish culture to foreigners.

Kramsch are presented, as well as the importance of teachers’ awareness about what kind of cultural background their students have. The author discusses also possible reader’s models by J. Spiro, which can be developed when teachers use literature during language class.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper promotes using accurately chosen literary texts in Polish as a foreign language classes. The author claims that from the perspective of foreign language teaching the anthropological approach to literature is advisable. In this approach, literature is perceived as a source of knowledge about the culture of speakers of the language in which it was created. The author also proves that fragments of contemporary Polish novels are the most desirable choice of a literary text in a language class. She points out everyday life as a topic of particular interest and usefulness for foreigners, and she considers it to be a relevant criterion to select literary texts for a language class. She also demonstrates that it is possible to find adequate literary works for each proficiency level, including beginner’s level. In the second part of the article, concrete examples of using literary texts in a language class are presented, namely three fragments of contemporary Polish novels featuring different aspects of everyday life of Poles. A fragment of the novel Jak pokochać centra handlowe by Natalia Fiedorczuk is suggested for the A1 level, a piece of Lata powyżej zera by Anna Cieplak is recommended for the B1 level, and a paragraph of Siódemka by Ziemowit Szczerek is proposed for the C1 level. Cultural content present in each of these texts is analyzed in detail, as well as vocabulary and grammar structures. Finally, different exercises based on these fragments are presented. They are focused on such language skills and components as: reading comprehension, vocabulary, speaking, and writing. Many of these exercises implement the intercultural approach to teaching foreign languages.

- Summary/Abstract:The article gathers observations on the use of fragments of the novel Chmurdalia by Joanna Bator in the process of teaching foreigners at intermediate and advanced levels of Polish. The lesson script was developed and implemented at AMU School of Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students. The aim of the lesson was to develop literary competence and language skills of students, as well as to deepen their knowledge and develop reading skills. This was done by bringing closer cultural contexts contained in the novel, as well as making students aware of sociolinguistic rules and the existence of individual differences in the way of seeing and describing the world. A review of the topics contained in the novel, which are commonly regarded as embarrassing or controversial (age, appearance, social origin, religion, poverty, loneliness, homophobia, nationalism), required the introduction of the concept of cultural taboos. Familiarizing students with the author and the characters from the novel facilitated learning of useful language functions, e.g. expressing opinions, judgments, and beliefs.

- Page Range:134-143
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:literature; stereotype; teaching Polish as a foreign language
- Summary/Abstract:The paper constitutes an analysis of fragments of a short novel Herod-baba by J.I. Kraszewski. It focuses on the author’s strategy of constructing literary characters on the basis of contrast. The background of the analysis is a broadly understood term “stereotype”, referring both to gender and to nationality, and deeply embedded in the historical reality of the 19th and the turn of the 17th and 18th century. Showing how Kraszewski built his story between realism and partial vision also permits to denounce the presence of disdain for anyone or anything foreign in the history of Polish literature. Glaring juxtapositions of Poles and foreigners in Kraszewski’s novel were used as a basis for language exercises. They reflect the writer’s poetics of contrast and they constitute great teaching material for foreigners learning Polish, especially for vocabulary exercises.
