Summary/Abstract: The concept of sublimation returns in Freud’s writings from the very beginning, since the Studies on Hysteria, and in many divergent forms reccurs until the very end, from Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality; Leonardo da Vinci, A Memory of his Childhood; Beyond the Pleasure Principle through Civilization and its Discontents. Still, this notion is one of the weakest in terms of theoretical elaboration; according to Laplanche and Pontalis, there is no “theory of sublimation” as such. My task is to outline the difficulties which Freud encounters when trying to out in words his metapsychological theory of sublimational processes and answer the question whether these problems are inherent to the concept of sublimation or whether it might be possible to find a way out of this impass.
