Salted Fish Products in Roman Egypt, Papyrogical Sources

Summary/Abstract: The documentary papyri provide most of the information needed in the study of everyday life in Roman Egypt. Numerous references to salted fish products indicate that making, selling and consuming these goods constituted an integral part of daily living. Some papyri barely remember fish sauces or salted fish among other foods or within shopping lists, but others provide important details concerning the role they played in the economy of the province, and especially concerning their place in everyday needs. This paper tries to answer some important questions: how, when and what kind of fish was ate in Roman Egypt, and, on the other hand, how much and how often was spent on such products by people living during the first Christian centuries. Rezumat: Papirii documentari furnizează cele mai multe informaţii şi imprimă o notă aparte studiului vieţii cotidiene în Egiptul roman. Numeroase menţiuni cu privire la produsele obţinute din peşte indică faptul că producţia şi comercializarea acestor bunuri constituiau părţi integrante ale traiului de zi cu zi. Unii papiri abia amintesc sosurile de peşte sau peştele sărat printre alte alimente sau în liste de cumpărături, dar alţii oferă detalii importante cu privire la rolul lor în economia provinciei, dar mai ales cu privire la rolul pe care îl ocupau în satisfacerea nevoilor cotidiene. Cât, când şi ce fel de peşte se consuma în Egiptul roman? Cât de mult şi cât de des cheltuiau oamenii primelor secole creştine pe astfel de produse? Întrebări vechi, răspunsuri noi…
