Summary/Abstract: This study is aimed at portraying Adalbert Cserni with the help of two commemorative speeches held by two of his peers, Prof. Zlamál Ágoston and Prof. Kárpiss János, in 1916 and 1917. The two remembered Cserni extremely well and their speeches are excellent testimonies of their colleague’s personality. Written in different styles, the two speeches immortalize Cserni, referring especially to his well-known modesty. Cserni’s vast knowledge and cultural tastes are also touched upon. Zlamál’s speech was quite dramatic and full of metaphors, while Kárpiss’ was more objective and scientific. Both speakers praised Cserni’s cultural achievements, “the ennobling power of ambition, the strength of character, his consistency, his high aim in life”. The 2006 commemoration of Adalbert Cserni at the Alba Iulia Museum expresses the desire of museum employees to honor their forerunner, regardless of the time he lived in, his nationality or the language of his works. He is contemporary to us, immortal through his achievements.
