Summary/Abstract: Such expressions as {całkowicie (eintirely), zupełnie (thouroughly)} (and also similar to them {do szczętu}) are called in the European literature means of gradation. Particles and adverbs of degree (the meaning of the terms {particle} and {adverb} in different linguistics traditions are here disregarded) were thoroughly analyzed. They serve as a means of expressing speaker’s emotions, their persuasive function is also important. The lexical entry {do szczętu} is analyzed in the wider context of {ze szczętem} and {doszczętnie}. It expresses speaker’s subjective opinion about a norm of something that has been exceeded. According to him, the action that the verb names could not last longer, because its object has achieved some kind of boundary. The analysis is concluded by a proposal of the explication of the adverb {do szczętu}.
