Inserting and adding – two metatextual operations

Summary/Abstract: In the present text the problem of distinguishing two ways of locating metatextual expressions in the sentence structure – inserting and adding – is discussed. It is claimed that operators of adding (e.g. {nie mówiąc o}) are characterized by a constant syntactic direction, requiring a preposed element. On the other hand, inserted operators (e.g. {krótko mówiąc}) can be combined with preposed or postposed components. In this case, structural and prosodic factors fix the direction of connection with other elements.
