Summary/Abstract: Variation in Polish phraseology is much more conspicuous than in other language areas; this results, to a large extent, from the complexity of phraseological units. The variativity of phraseological units manifests itself at the phonetic, morphological and syntactic level, including also the lexical content. Phraseological variants may differ in their chronology, territorial origin and in their expressive marking. In the course of the development of a language one can observe two contradictory tendencies: the survival of a specific phraseological variant and the disappearance of other ones or the creation of variants of units which previously were homogeneous.
