Summary/Abstract: The author of the paper analyses some lexicographical definitions and semantic representations of selected particles. An important point of reference is the dictionary project concerning Polish particles being carried out by the team led by Professor Maciej Grochowski and the understanding of the term {particle} adopted in their investigation. Particles are understood as phrases which are outside the relational syntax of an utterance (predicates assigned by speakers to specific objects). The author focuses her attention on the difficulties involved in finding a metalanguage that would enable one to offer an adequate description of such phrases.
