Summary/Abstract: This article describes political and economical effects on making use of navigational features of the river Drava in traffic of goods and passengers in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. In making observations about the lower and briefly about the middle course of the river Drava, this article attempts to analyze the natural and geographical characteristics, social and political structure in which the transfer function of the river Drava was accomplished generally and the role of the river Drava in the economic development of Osijek. The dynamics and the extent of adjustment works in the lower course of the river Drava, principally depending on state funds, have been described, as well as the extent to which the works allowed for the navigability of the river. Finally, the importance of inclusion of the river Drava into the general traffic system and thus making it one of the key elements of the modernization of the Croatian economy has also been described in this article.
