Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author explores the river waterways in the Croatian Danube area in the 19th century through the prism of the then social, political and economic circumstances. The Danube waterways at the time were caught in between the needs and possibilities, achievements and limitations. Due to a development of transit trade, the emergence of the need for crops, especially wheat, as well as lumber, tobacco and other goods, larger-scale and systemic regulatory investments took place. Such economic trends exhibited a direct impact on Croatia, where a majority of people were engaged in agrarian economy. Thus, despite the slow economic development and insufficient government investments, those river waterways (of the Sava, the Drava and the Dunube rivers) found themselves caught in the midst of interest of both domestic and foreign economic forces.
