Summary/Abstract: In the early summer of 1981 a young gay man by the name of Neil Bartlett moved from a small town to the big city. In his case, the big city happened to be London, and it was not altogether unfamiliar territory to him. “When I was sixteen I used to come up here on the train to go to the museums, to stand and look at the pictures, and also to be looked at, picked up, and then when I was twenty, I would come up here to meet someone. It was always the place to be. I used to get an erection just waiting for the train.”1
