Summary/Abstract: Four years after its launch, the European Union’s ‘Eastern Partnership’ was reviewed at the summit in Vilnius in November 2013. While Association Agreements were initiated with Georgia and Moldova, similar agreements have been rejected by Ukraine and Armenia for the time being. This was mainly due to pressure and offers made by the Russian government, which opposes the ‘Eastern Partnership’ and regards it as an intrusion by the EU in its defined sphere of influence. The paper analyses the recent developments in the EU’s relations with its eastern neighbours and examines the achievements and shortcomings of the ‘Eastern Partnership’. It argues that the policy, with increasing commitment by the member states, is likely to have significant impact on EU-Russian relations, which risk becoming more confrontational in 2014 and beyond.
