Summary/Abstract: The main goal of the paper is to present preliminary results of how shyness ["nieśmiałość"] (and bashfulness ["wstydliwość"]) are understood in contemporary Polish. The study was based on lexicographic data (modern dictionaries of Polish) and corpus databases (the National Corpus of Polish and a small thematic corpus which includes selected texts on shame, shyness and bashfulness). The paper deals with semantic problems such as: conceptual complexity, relations between cognate concepts (lexicalized by the words: "wstyd" [shame], "nieśmiałość" [shyness], "wstydliwość" [shyness / bashfulness], "onieśmielenie" [shyness / embarrassment], "zażenowanie" [embarrassment] etc., as well as the issue of conceptual aspects and profiles and the diversity of points of view in various kinds of discourse.
