Summary/Abstract: The essay outlines the author’s methodological and theoretical premises in studying institutional and ideological transfer and exemplifi es this approach by surveying several characteristic instances of transfer of liberal ideas and institutions in the Balkans in the course of the 19th century – the constitutive period of modern statehood in the region.
