Summary/Abstract: By studying the Transylvanian intelligentsia’s process of development, the author intends to analyze it from an atypical perspective. Based upon the memorialist pages kept in manuscript and belonging to a pilgrim student, the paper reveals the individual aspects connected to the attendance of Western universities. The personal experience of a young Transylvanian who, coming from a rural environment and arriving at Utrecht as a pilgrim student, exemplifies the difficulties met by the first generation of intellectuals in the process of their development. The analysis of the memorialist notes also provides the opportunity of observing general features in the young Transylvanian’s personal feelings.
