Building an Imaginary of Evil

Keywords: Thomas Mann; Vergílio Ferreira; the Legend of King Roderick; Visigoths; King Vitiza.

Summary/Abstract: Informed by the principle that evil is a cultural creation, that all is natural in nature, three texts are used as examples of the construction of imaginaries of evil: Thomas Mann’s The Transposed Heads: A Legend of India, where evil is created in search for the perfection of the Other, Vergílio Ferreira’s first novel, O Caminho Fica Longe, and the legend of king Roderick, which show both how the closing of the I, where there is no place for the Other and which, on the contrary, the Other is imposed upon, can lead to the destruction of one’s self and of others or even of a complete country, as in the legend of Roderick.
