A Brief Story of an „Entrepreneurial“ University

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses upon a Bulgarian university (one of the cases studied for the PROKNOW project), and its research topic is the existence and potential of spin-off firms arising around and within that university, from the perspective of the possibility of establishing stable mutual relations between the educational institution and industry (business) and from the perspective of the reverse impact of spin-off firms upon the mother institution from which they originated. Based on the analysis, the article proposes a possible answer to Latour’s famous question „who does science?“ (Latour 1987), by rewording the question and placing it in the context of the present historical conditions of Bulgarian society, science, and industry after the end of socialist management; some characteristic features of post-socialist transformations and the emancipation of „academic entrepreneurship“ are highlighted.
