Summary/Abstract: The article depicts academic entrepreneurship the concept of „entrepreneurial university“. The in three Bulgarian research organizations – one uni-author’s objective is to show to what extent these versity, and two institutes – through the prism of organizations are capable of fulfilling the so-called „third mission“ of universities: to capitalize on their scientific achievements. The entrepreneurial university is at the core of the „triple helix model“, developed by Etzkovic and Leydesdorff. According to this model, an increasingly important role in the innovative process in the new knowledge-based economy is played by universities but also by the state institutions, NGOs, scientific organizations, and other formations. Due to the importance of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Agricultural Academy for the country’s innovative capacity, one institute from each of these structures is presented in the article. The author reveals the most important obstacles to the implementation activity of these organizations under the new economic conditions following the changes that commenced in 1989.
